This chart highlights some of the important evolutionary stages through which we have supposedly gone through. It is important to understand that evolution is not a sequence of one type of thing (plant or animal) becoming another type of thing replacing the first, but rather involves one type of thing branching or separating into two lines of descent. One line of descent may change significantly to become a recognizably new type of thing, while the other may remain unchanged or itself become something different. It is a “tree structure”, as illustrated on the next slide.
